A window can look right on a plan and still be wrong for the opening, the frame system or the way the room is used. That is why a guide to standard window sizes should start with the site, not just a product listing. For Melbourne homeowners, builders and renovators, the quickest path to a workable window is knowing which sizes are commonly available, what the dimensions actually refer to, and when a custom size will save trouble later.
Guide to standard window sizes: start with the measurement
Window sizes are generally shown as width x height in millimetres. A window listed as 1200 x 900 is 1200 mm wide and 900 mm high. Always confirm whether those dimensions are the overall frame size, the required structural opening or a nominal product size before ordering.
For replacement work, measure the existing frame opening carefully after removing trims where practical. Do not rely only on the visible glass size or a measurement taken from inside the room. Old timber frames, packed reveals and uneven brickwork can disguise the true opening. Measure the width at the top, middle and bottom, then the height on both sides and through the centre. Use the smallest measurement as your working reference until the installation method has been confirmed.
New builds are more straightforward, but the frame still needs appropriate clearance for packers, flashing, sealing and adjustment. The window supplier, installer and builder should be working from the same dimensions. A few millimetres missed at quoting stage can hold up installation when the frame arrives on site.

There is no single Australian standard window size that applies to every manufacturer or every building. Medium windows commonly sit around 900 x 900 mm, 1200 x 900 mm and 1200 x 1200 mm. These proportions work well in bedrooms, studies and smaller living areas, particularly where an awning or sliding sash is required.
Larger fixed or sliding windows may run from 1500 x 1200 mm through to 2400 x 1200 mm and beyond, depending on the system. These are regularly specified for living rooms, rear extensions and feature walls where daylight and outlook are priorities. Bigger is not automatically better, however. A larger glazed area can add heat gain, increase glass weight and require a higher-performing frame and glazing selection.
Awning window sizes
Awning windows are popular for bedrooms, bathrooms and kitchens because they provide ventilation while offering some protection from light rain. Common sizes include 600 x 600 mm, 900 x 600 mm, 900 x 900 mm and 1200 x 600 mm.
The practical limit depends on sash weight and hardware. A very wide awning sash can be heavy to operate and may not give the same weather performance as two narrower windows. If ventilation is the goal, two well-positioned awning windows can be more useful than one oversized unit.
Sliding window sizes
Sliding windows suit areas where an outward-opening sash would obstruct a walkway, patio or service area. Typical configurations include 1200 x 900 mm, 1500 x 900 mm, 1800 x 1200 mm and 2100 x 1200 mm.
A sliding window does not provide the same percentage of open area as an awning window because one panel generally slides behind another. It is a practical choice for access and space-saving, but worth considering if the room needs stronger natural airflow.
Fixed window sizes
Fixed windows can be made in small highlight formats or large picture-window layouts. Because there are no moving sashes or operating hardware, fixed glazing is often the most economical way to bring more light into a room. Common examples include 600 x 1200 mm highlights, 1200 x 1200 mm squares and wider units from 1800 x 1200 mm upwards.
They work best when paired with an opening window elsewhere in the room. A wall of fixed glass may look clean and modern, but it will not help with day-to-day ventilation.
Choose the window style before locking in the size
The same opening can take different window types, but the result will not perform the same way. An awning window is useful for controlled ventilation. A sliding window is practical beside paths and decks. A fixed window maximises glass area. Bi-fold windows can open up a servery or entertaining area, although they need adequate clearance and a suitable sill detail.
Think about how the window will be used at 7 am in winter, on a wet afternoon and during a hot Melbourne summer. Can the sash be reached easily? Will furniture block it? For builders and developers, custom does not have to mean slow or complicated. Clear opening measurements, product selection and glazing requirements make quoting faster and reduce variations once fabrication begins.
Do not overlook glass, energy and compliance
Window dimensions affect more than appearance. Larger panes can require thicker glass, stronger frame sections or different glazing configurations. Double glazing adds thermal and acoustic benefits, but it also adds weight, so sash size limits need to be considered.
For homes near busy roads, schools or commercial areas, glass selection can make a noticeable difference to indoor noise. For energy performance, consider the full window system rather than glass alone. Frame type, seals, air gaps, orientation and installation quality all contribute to comfort and heating and cooling costs.
Projects in bushfire-prone areas may need BAL-rated glazing, screens or frame solutions. Coastal locations, upper-storey openings and exposed sites can have additional requirements for wind pressure, water penetration and corrosion resistance. These conditions can change which standard sizes are suitable, particularly for wide or tall openings.
A practical checklist before you order
Before finalising a window, confirm the overall frame dimension, opening size, handing and operating direction, glass specification, reveal requirement, screen type, sill detail and site access. Also check whether the window needs to meet a specific BAL, acoustic or energy-performance requirement.
For replacements, take photos of the inside and outside of each opening. They help identify whether the new frame needs to fit within an existing reveal, replace the entire frame or work around brickwork and cladding. For larger projects, keep a window schedule with a reference number for every opening so sizes and configurations do not get mixed up on site.
